What is Epoxy Anyway?

I fell in love with epoxy over 6 years ago when I created my first coaster. At time time, everyone was using Pinterest and I was no different. When I picked up crafting again to decompress from my corporate job, I quickly went from pinning primarily food recipes and products I wanted to buy, to crafts and projects that inspired me. When I saw a creator’s photos of beer cap coasters, I knew I needed to buy some epoxy and give them a try.

Over the years I have researched and tried numerous types and brands of epoxy. While they all have their pros and cons, the underlying science of epoxy remains consistent.

Epoxy resin is a type of polymer, which are large molecules with repeating subunits. Polymers are known for their toughness and elasticity, and they are commonly found in various materials we use daily, such as wool, rubber, Styrofoam, and epoxy.

The polymeric structure of epoxy resins creates a strong bond that is not only waterproof but also highly resistant to high temperatures. This makes epoxy an ideal choice for tumbler making, where durability and heat resistance are crucial.

When using two-part epoxies, the resin and hardener are mixed together. Over a period of up to 24 hours, the mixture transforms from a thick liquid to a putty-like consistency and eventually fully cures into a hardened material.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is essential when using epoxy uncured epoxy. Once the epoxy has fully cured, it undergoes a chemical transformation, and any potential health hazards associated with uncured epoxy, such as skin irritation or harmful fumes, are greatly minimized or eliminated.

If you have concerns regarding the use of epoxy, I offer Epoxy-Free and Sublimation tumblers as well!

Not all epoxies are created equal, however. There are many kinds out there and not all of them are suited for use on tumblers. That is why I ONLY use FOOD-SAFE epoxy. These resins are designed to be non-toxic and safe for food contact. They can provide a clear, glossy finish to your tumblers while ensuring they are safe for use with food and beverages.

Whether creating tumblers, coasters, keychains, or any number of other functional art pieces, epoxy resin offers versatility, long-lasting performance, and exceptional heat resistance to protect your tumblers, making them resistant to everyday wear and tear. The waterproof nature of epoxy resin ensures that the designs remain intact even when exposed to liquids.

With epoxy tumbler making, I have the freedom to unleash my creativity. Whether I want to create unique designs, incorporate beautiful colors and patterns, or add personalized touches, epoxy resin provides endless possibilities. The cured epoxy creates a smooth and glossy finish that enhances the overall aesthetics of your tumblers.
